# Can USDC yield pay for AI inference?

> USDC yield cannot pay for AI on Gatewayz yet. USDC is a fiat-backed stablecoin issued by Circle and cannot be staked, so any yield would come from lending it, which adds smart contract, liquidity, oracle and bad-debt risk. Gatewayz lists USDC as coming and would support it only through a lending protocol with a published audit, turning interest actually received into an inference discount.

**In one line:** USDC has no native staking; Gatewayz would only use its lending interest through a protocol with a published audit.

You cannot use USDC yield to pay for AI on Gatewayz yet. USDC is a dollar [stablecoin](/yield/glossary#stablecoin) issued by Circle, and it has no native [staking](/yield/glossary#staking), so the only way it produces a return is by being lent to borrowers. Gatewayz lists USDC as coming: if it is added, lending interest Gatewayz actually receives would become an [inference discount](/yield/glossary#inference-discount-balance), but only through a lending protocol with a published audit. Today the live asset is [ADA](/yield/assets/ada).

**Pre-launch.** The program is built and switched off on mainnet. A working demo runs on Cardano's preprod testnet with test ADA, by invitation. Not available to US or Canadian persons. Every participant must confirm they are not a US or Canadian person before linking a wallet.

## Key takeaways

- USDC is issued by Circle and is redeemable 1:1 for US dollars.
- Most of its reserves sit in the Circle Reserve Fund, an SEC-registered government money market fund; the rest is cash at banks.
- Circle discloses reserve holdings weekly and publishes monthly third-party assurance from a Big Four accounting firm under AICPA attestation standards.
- USDC cannot be staked. Its yield would come from lending, which adds risks ADA delegation does not have.
- On Cardano, Cardano.org lists USDCx, backed 1:1 by USDC through Circle's xReserve bridge.

## What is USDC and what backs it?

USDC is a fiat-backed stablecoin from Circle, redeemable 1:1 for US dollars. Its reserves are mostly the Circle Reserve Fund, an SEC-registered government money market fund holding cash, short-dated US Treasuries and overnight Treasury repo, with the rest held as cash at banks.

Circle discloses its reserve holdings weekly and publishes monthly third-party assurance from a Big Four accounting firm under AICPA attestation standards. Circle's transparency page does not name the firm. An attestation is a point-in-time check of reserves, which is narrower than a full audit.

## Is USDC available on Cardano?

Yes, as USDCx. Cardano.org lists USDCx on Cardano, backed 1:1 by USDC through Circle's xReserve bridge. Gatewayz's offer lists USDC's yield source as lending on its own chain; no chain or protocol has been chosen. Cardano's own stablecoins are covered on [Cardano stablecoins](/yield/assets/stablecoins).

## Why can't USDC be staked?

Because staking rewards pay for securing a proof-of-stake network, and only a chain's own coin does that. A stablecoin in your wallet takes no part in consensus, so it earns no protocol rewards. Compare [ADA](/yield/assets/ada): you [delegate](/yield/glossary#delegation) it to a [stake pool](/yield/glossary#stake-pool) without moving it, and the network itself pays the rewards. The [assets overview](/yield/assets) explains how Gatewayz ranks assets for this reason.

| | ADA delegation | USDC lending |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Where the return comes from | Protocol staking rewards | Interest paid by borrowers |
| Where your coins sit | In your wallet | In a lending contract, lent out |
| Smart contract risk | None: delegation is a native certificate | Yes |
| Withdrawal | Spendable at any time | Depends on unborrowed liquidity |
| Main extra risk | Rewards you give up, pool performance | Contract bugs, oracle errors, bad debt, depeg, issuer |

## How would lending USDC produce yield?

Through interest from borrowers. In a pooled lending market, you supply stablecoins and receive a token that represents your share; on Liqwid, a Cardano example, these qTokens rise in value against the underlying as borrowers pay interest, and rates rise with utilization. Borrowers post overcollateralized loans that anyone can liquidate once a loan's health factor falls below 1. The same mechanism is explained in more depth on [Cardano stablecoins](/yield/assets/stablecoins).

## What are the risks of earning yield on USDC?

The risks come from the issuer, the lending protocol and the market.

- **Issuer risk.** You rely on Circle holding the reserves and honoring redemptions. Attestations are point-in-time checks, not full audits.
- **Depeg risk.** A stablecoin can drift from $1 because of doubts about its reserves or a run on redemptions.
- **Smart contract risk.** A bug or exploit in the lending contracts can lose deposits. Audits lower this risk but do not remove it.
- **Withdrawal liquidity risk.** Supplied funds are lent out, so withdrawals depend on unborrowed liquidity.
- **Oracle and bad-debt risk.** A bad price feed can cause wrong liquidations, and if collateral falls faster than liquidators act, suppliers absorb the shortfall.

The ADA program's risks are on [Risks](/yield/risks), and what Gatewayz can touch is on [Security](/yield/security).

## What would have to be true for Gatewayz to support USDC?

Three things. Gatewayz would need a lending protocol with a published audit, this page would have to list that protocol's contract risk before launch, and only interest actually received would become a discount, the same rule as ADA. The discount would remain non-transferable and could not be withdrawn or exchanged. If you want USDC support, join the waitlist.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I pay for AI with USDC yield on Gatewayz today?

No. USDC is listed as coming, and ADA is the only live asset. The program itself is pre-launch, with a working demo on Cardano's preprod testnet by invitation, and it is not available to US or Canadian persons.

### Does USDC earn staking rewards?

No. USDC is a stablecoin and has no native staking. Any return comes from lending it to borrowers or from protocol interest, which carries smart contract, depeg, liquidity, oracle and bad-debt risk.

### How does Circle show that USDC is backed?

Circle discloses reserve holdings weekly and publishes monthly third-party assurance from a Big Four accounting firm under AICPA attestation standards. Most reserves are in the Circle Reserve Fund, an SEC-registered government money market fund.

### What is USDCx on Cardano?

Cardano.org lists USDCx as the form of USDC on Cardano, backed 1:1 by USDC through Circle's xReserve bridge.

### Would the USDC discount be cash?

No. As with ADA, the discount would be held on your Gatewayz account, usable only for inference, and could not be withdrawn, transferred or exchanged.
