# Use ETH staking rewards to pay for AI

> Not yet. Gatewayz yield-as-inference supports only ADA today, and ETH is on the coming list. The plan is to turn Ethereum staking rewards into the same kind of AI inference discount. Native Ethereum staking needs 32 ETH per validator, so smaller holders would need a pool; Gatewayz has a StakeWise V3 vault integration built and switched off.

**In one line:** ETH is coming, not live: the 32 ETH validator minimum is the main design problem, and the vault support already in the backend is switched off.

You cannot use ETH staking rewards to pay for AI on Gatewayz yet: ETH is a coming asset, and the program runs on ADA only. The plan is to turn Ethereum staking rewards into the same kind of [inference discount](/yield/glossary#inference-discount-balance) ADA holders get, keeping custody with the holder wherever Ethereum allows it. Ethereum support through a StakeWise V3 vault is already built in the Gatewayz backend and switched off.

**Pre-launch.** The program is built and switched off on mainnet. A working demo runs on Cardano's preprod testnet with test ADA, by invitation. Not available to US or Canadian persons. Every participant must confirm they are not a US or Canadian person before linking a wallet.

## Key takeaways

- ETH is not live in yield-as-inference, and no launch date is set.
- Native Ethereum staking means running a validator, which needs 32 ETH, so most holders would need a pool that is not native to Ethereum.
- There is no fixed unbonding period: exits go through a queue that depends on how many others are exiting.
- Ethereum has [slashing](/yield/glossary#slashing): provable misbehavior burns stake and forces an exit. Cardano delegation has none.

## How does native ETH staking work?

Natively, a holder runs a validator by depositing ETH, or hires an operator to run it for them. Pooled staking exists, but it is not native to Ethereum: the protocol pays the pool's validators, not the individual holder.

Once deposited, ETH is locked in a consensus-layer validator. It can only leave to a withdrawal address, and that address can be set once. Under staking-as-a-service, the operator holds the signing keys while the withdrawal keys usually stay with the holder. That split is what makes a [non-custodial](/yield/glossary#non-custodial) setup possible on Ethereum.

Rewards accrue every 12-second slot and every epoch (32 slots, about 6.4 minutes). Type 1 validators have the balance above 32 ETH swept out automatically every few days; Type 2 (compounding) validators keep it staked.

## How long does it take to unstake ETH?

There is no fixed period. A voluntary exit joins a queue whose length depends on how many other validators are exiting; ethereum.org estimates about 3.5 to 7 days for 400,000 to 800,000 withdrawals. After the exit, the next withdrawal sweep pays the full balance to the withdrawal address.

The minimum is 32 ETH per validator. Since the Pectra upgrade a validator can hold up to 2,048 ETH, and compounding validators must keep at least 32 ETH.

Slashing applies. Provable misbehavior, such as double signing, burns stake: under 0.1% when a validator is slashed alone, and up to 100% in a correlated mass event. A slashed validator is also forced to exit, and being offline costs small penalties.

## How does ETH staking compare with ADA delegation?

The biggest differences are the minimum, the lock-up and slashing. ADA delegation moves nothing and locks nothing; Ethereum staking locks ETH in a validator.

| | ETH (native) | ADA (Cardano delegation) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Custody | Locked in a validator; exits only to a withdrawal address set once | Stays in your wallet; delegation moves nothing |
| Lock-up / unbonding | Exit queue, no fixed period (about 3.5 to 7 days in ethereum.org's estimate), then a withdrawal sweep | None; spend or switch pools at any time |
| Minimum | 32 ETH per validator | None in the sources we checked; a one-time 2 ADA stake address deposit, refunded on deregistration |
| Slashing | Yes: under 0.1% alone, up to 100% in a correlated event | None |
| Reward cadence | Per 12-second slot and 6.4-minute epoch; excess swept every few days (Type 1) | Every 5-day [epoch](/yield/glossary#epoch); first rewards about 15 to 20 days after delegating |

## What would Gatewayz need to support ETH?

A way for holders with less than 32 ETH to stake, without giving up custody, and a way for Gatewayz to receive the rewards it converts. The 32 ETH minimum rules out a design like Cardano's, where any holder points their own wallet at a pool.

The Gatewayz backend already contains Ethereum support through a StakeWise V3 vault, switched off. A pooled design like that is not native to Ethereum, so it adds a layer the ADA program does not have. Before ETH goes live, this page would list that layer's contract risk, as the [Risks](/yield/risks) page commits to for any asset that uses contracts. Slashing, a risk to principal that ADA delegators do not face, would be explained there too.

Accounting would follow the [ADA model](/yield/how-it-works): discount calculated only from rewards Gatewayz has actually received, never in advance.

## What can I use today?

ADA. It is the one asset the program supports: you [delegate](/yield/glossary#delegation) from your own wallet, your ADA never moves, and rewards become an inference discount. The program is pre-launch, with a working demo on Cardano's preprod testnet by invitation, and is not available to US or Canadian persons. See [ADA](/yield/assets/ada) and [all assets](/yield/assets).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I use ETH staking rewards to pay for AI on Gatewayz today?

No. ETH is a coming asset and no launch date is set. Today the program supports only ADA, and it is pre-launch.

### Why does ETH need a pool when ADA does not?

Native Ethereum staking means running a validator, and each validator needs 32 ETH. Cardano delegation has no such threshold, so any holder can point their own wallet at a pool. For most ETH holders, a pool is the only practical route.

### Is ETH staking non-custodial?

It can be. Staked ETH can only leave a validator to its withdrawal address, and under staking-as-a-service the withdrawal keys usually stay with the holder while the operator holds the signing keys.

### How long does it take to get ETH back after unstaking?

There is no fixed period. An exit waits in a queue that depends on how many others are exiting, which ethereum.org estimates at about 3.5 to 7 days for 400,000 to 800,000 withdrawals, and the next withdrawal sweep then pays out the full balance.

### Can staked ETH be slashed?

Yes. Provable misbehavior such as double signing burns stake, from under 0.1% for a validator slashed alone up to 100% in a correlated mass event, and forces an exit. Cardano delegation has no slashing.
